What Is an APK File?

How to open, edit and convert APK files

This article explains what an APK file is, how to open or install it (how exactly depends on your operating system), and why converting an APK file may not be helpful.

What is an APK file?

A file with the APK file extension is an Android package file used to distribute applications on Google’s Android operating system.

APK files are saved in ZIP format and are usually downloaded directly to Android devices, usually through the Google Play store, but can also be found on other websites.

Some of the content found in a typical APK file includes: AndroidManifest.xml, classes.dex, and resources.arsc file; also a META-INF and resolution case.

How to open the APK file

APK files can be opened on a number of operating systems, but they are primarily used on Android devices.

Open an APK file on Android

To open an APK file on your Android device, you need to download it like any other file, then open it when prompted. However, APK files installed outside the Google Play Store may not be installed immediately due to a security block applied.

To bypass this download restriction and install APK files from unknown sources, access one of these menus, depending on your version of Android:

  • Settings > Apps and Notifications > Further away > Private app access > Install unknown apps
  • Settings > Apps and Notifications
  • Settings > Security

Depending on your device, you may need to allow a certain app like Chrome to install unofficial APK files. Or enable it if you see Install unknown apps or Unknown sources.

If the APK file does not open, try searching for the file with a file manager such as Astro File Manager or ES File Explorer File Manager.

How to Install APK Files on Android

Open an APK file in Windows

You can open the APK file on a PC using an Android emulator (these are our favorites) like BlueStacks. In this program, my apps select the tab then install apk from the corner of the window.

How to Use Bluestacks to Run Android Apps on Windows

Open an APK file on Mac

ARC Welder is a Google Chrome extension for Chrome OS for testing Android apps, but it works on any operating system. This means that you can open an APK on your Mac or Windows computer as long as that app is installed in the Chrome browser.

Open an APK file on iOS

You cannot open or install APK files on iPhone or iPad because the file was created completely different from the apps used on these devices and the two platforms are not compatible with each other.

Extracting APK files

You can also open an APK file with a file extractor tool in Windows, macOS, or any other desktop operating system. (Try one of our best free unzip programs.) Since APK files are simply archives of multiple folders and files, you can open them with a program like 7-Zip or PeaZip to see the different components that make up the app.

But actually doing this utilize APK file on a computer. To do this, you basically need an Android emulator (like BlueStacks) running Android OS on the computer.

How to convert an APK file

Although a file conversion program or service is normally required to convert one type of file to another, they aren’t very helpful when it comes to APK files. This is because the APK file is an application designed to run only on certain devices, unlike other file types such as MP4 or PDF which run on various platforms.

If you want to convert your APK file to ZIP instead, you need to follow the instructions outlined above. Open the APK file in a file extraction tool, then repackage it in ZIP format or rename the .APK file to .ZIP.

Renaming a file this way is not how you convert a file. This only works for APK files because the file format already uses ZIP but adds a different file extension (.APK) to the end.

As you read above, you cannot convert APK to IPA for use on iOS or convert APK to EXE to use Android app on Windows.

But you can normally find an iOS alternative that works instead of the Android app you want to install on your iPhone or iPad. Most developers have the same app on both platforms (APK for Android and IPA for iOS).

Instead of APK to EXE converter, install a Windows APK Opener above, then use it to open Android app on your computer. It doesn’t have to be in EXE file format for this to work.
