William Shatner Reacts To Racist Backlash Against Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Reva

Star Trek legend William Shatner reacts to the racist backlash directed at Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s Reva actor, Moses Ingram. The latter series is the latest in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars TV explosion, which has seen a number of new shows premiere on Disney+. After debuting its first two episodes on May 27, Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 3 aired on Wednesday, leaving three more until the miniseries finishes its run.

While the show has so far been well-received by critics, its online reception from fans has been marred by a flood of discriminatory messages directed at Ingram, a Black American actor who plays Imperial Inquisitor Reva a.k.a. Third Sister. The online abuse is part of a trend seen across major fandoms, but also Star Wars specifically, most notably with sequel trilogy star John Boyega and The Last Jedi‘s Kelly Marie Tran. Many prominent individuals have since come to Ingram’s defense, including her Obi-Wan Kenobi co-star Ewan McGregor, who made it clear in a video posted to social media that someone exhibiting such behavior is “no Star Wars fan” in his eyes.

Now, quote tweeting that video, Shatner adds his voice to the chorus defending Ingram. The 91-year-old actor keeps his message short and sweet, noting that the current trend of toxic online fan cultures needs to stop. Check out Shatner’s original tweet below:

Shatner is surely no stranger at having to fend off racist viewers, as his run on Star Trek: The Original Series was notable for its on-screen diversity. While the famous kiss between Kirk and Uhura wasn’t the television first it’s sometimes hailed as, it was still controversial enough that the network wanted two versions of the scene shot, to give them the option to run the episode without it. Instead, Shatner and Nichelle Nichols conspired to deliberately sabotage every version of the alternate scene, to ensure the interracial kiss went out as planned.

It’s disheartening that, more than 50 years since that Star Trek episode was broadcast, this Obi-Wan Kenobi Reva backlash has been the show’s prevailing story. At least this time Star Wars has taken some official steps to stand up for their star, but this is part of a larger problem in fan culture that will take some serious work to make better. For now, fans can take comfort in knowing O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Obi-Wan Kenobi mystery character is set up for something big that’s sure to make the racist contingent equally as unhappy.
